Often, the greatest experiences come when you least expect them. That’s what happened to me. I have a vague knowledge of Marte Schau, knowing she had something truly extraordinary with her colossal voice. But the existence of the duo Mirakel? I had no idea. Two minutes after I had entered the concert space, I was floored. Spellbound. Swept away. The set-up: Marte Schau sings. And wow, does she sing magnificently. What power, what resonance. And then she has some electronica to do playful, surprising things with her voice. Mikael Fleron plays electronic hand drums and sopranino — a kind of soprano saxophone. Marte Schau’s singing, besides being insanely powerful, has a shamanic, spirit-weaving quality — like the Sami singer Mari Boine and the Faroese singer Eivør Pálsdóttir. Marte Schau’s singing and Mikael Fleron’s accompaniment left me utterly spellbound. Schau sings like a magical enchantress, straight from her heart into mine, directly into my wide-open soul. They hit every part of me that feels good, that opens me, that makes me surrender, give in. More Marte, more Mikael, more Mirakel. I had, unwittingly, crashed right into THE EXPERIENCE.
